Maybe you’ve heard a fellow airsoft player mention hop up and you were left thinking to yourself “What is hop up?” Well luckily for you we’re going to get right to it!
By definition and according to good ol Wikipedia, Hop Up “is the back-spin put on airsoft pellets and BBs to increase their range via the Magnus effect. In airsoft, the term refers to the device that creates the back spin of the BB. The pressure within the device creates a backspin on the BB when fired, thus creating a force pulling the BB upwords and increases range and accuracy.
It may take some time, but having the rite hop up is important if you want to maximize it’s effectiveness.
How To Adjust Your Hop-Up?
Adjusting your hop up is actually pretty simple. So lets break this thing down step by step
Step #1- Find a safe open area with at least 50 feet distance down range with a target about the size of a torso.
Step #2- Fire 2 shots at your target
Step #3- Observe where you’re hitting the target
Step #4- Follow the graph below for the best position
Different Degrees of Hop-up
A few different degrees of hop-up which are dictated by the softness and thickness of the rubber material that causes the BB to backspin. The user can choose weather you want a BB to have better traction, this a strong effect on the projectile or a softer touch to put a less aggressive spin on the BB.
Some of the degrees of Ho-up are:
50-60 Degrees – This is a soft low degree
65-75 Degrees – This is a medium degree
75-85 Degrees – This is an aggressive hard degree
It’s also a good idea to keep in mind the temperature of your hop up buckings. In cold winter conditions, your buckling can freeze up and greatly effect your guns hop-up. To combat this, switch to less thinker and softer buckings that will warm up quicker during gameplay.
Do All Airsoft Guns Have Hop-Up?
Most guns come with a Hop Up System built in. However, typically if you purchase a cheap airsoft gun, it wont come with any hop up system. Just make sure to check the description of the weapon and make sure it comes with one.
